Empowering Students to Achieve Excellence

Letter to Families

Letter to Families

March 3, 2026

Dear DY Intermediate Families:

Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. View our school’s report Card.

The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.

Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.

If you look at the section “How do our students perform on state tests?” you can note the percentage of students that scored at different achievement levels.  For English and Math, there has not been a significant change in the percentage of students who scored At or Exceeding Expectations.  For Science, there has been a 7% increase in students scoring at or Exceeding Expectations.  To consistently improve on student performance in our school, for English Language Arts, our main focus is on writing.  We are also excited to be adopting a new Literacy curriculum in all Grade 4 and 5 classrooms beginning next school year.  For Math, in 4th grade our continued focus is on fractions and understanding decimals like tenths and hundredths, which are special fractions.   In 5th grade, students expand on these ideas to explore connections between whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, using different strategies to solve problems. For Science, we hope to see continued improvement since all students are scheduled for a STEM Related Arts class that builds upon grade level Science instruction.

We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.  If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities such as our School Council, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, please contact me, or call the school. View our District’s report card or search for other schools’ report cards.  If you want a paper copy of this letter or the supporting links, please let us know and we can send it to you.

Sincerely,

Timothy Blake
