A Message from the Principals

Good Evening DYI Families,
As we settle into fall, we really need a few volunteers for our School Council.  The School Council annually reviews the School Improvement Plan.  One goal is to continue increasing community engagement.  We want to hold our Music Bingo in two short weeks and our Food Around the World Event in early November. These events will certainly happen with your support.  If you can be a part of our School Council Team, please message us through Parent Square, email, or call the school.  We appreciate your help in advance with these fun events.

Another area where we could use an assist from families is during our daily dismissal.  When we dismiss, we have many families who pick up their child, which is fine.  We even have families come and walk with their child after school as well, which is great. However, when you park near the Station Ave School or in the main school parking lot, you are asking your child to walk through the Parent Pick Up line traffic or through the 29 buses in the bus pick up line.  When we see kids walking through the traffic, they often report that their families told them to do so. Please (please please) jump into the parent pick-up line if that is your dismissal choice.  Even though the line can be long, that is a safer decision than walking through the line of car and bus traffic on their own at a young age.

Please read our flyers and messages below.  We are very excited to announce the results of our PJammin for Cancer event.  Everyone's generosity was amazing.

Sincerely,

Mr. Blake, Dr. Greeson, Mrs. Cleary, & Dr. Spano

Pjammin for Kids with Cancer – In Honor of Kallie

On Friday, September 25th, DYI participated in Pjammin for Kids with Cancer in honor of one of our own fourth-grade students, Kallie, who is currently fighting cancer.

All proceeds go directly toward supporting childhood cancer efforts through the ACCO(American Childhood Cancer Organization).  Most importantly, this is an opportunity for our school community to surround Kallie and her family with love and remind them that they are not fighting alone.

An incredibly sad fact about pediatric cancer is that although there have been great gains in the detection and treatment of cancer in general, the trajectory for pediatric cancer has not changed in decades. Children are our most precious resource, and we must continue to raise awareness and funding to ensure that pediatric cancers get the funding it deserves to change the lives of our children battling cancer!

With that being said, in a one-day fundraiser we raised $3017.67! This is by far our largest collection of money!

Thank you to all of the families, staff, and friends who have supported this cause!

Stay strong, Kallie!

October is Bullying Prevention Month

October is Bullying Prevention Month—a time for families, schools, and communities to work together to create safe, welcoming environments where every child feels respected and included.

For our fourth- and fifth-grade students, friendships and peer relationships become increasingly important. Families can help by talking regularly with children about kindness, inclusion, respectful communication, and what to do if they see or experience bullying. Remind your child that bullying is never their fault and that telling a trusted adult is an important step toward getting help.

This month, consider asking your child:
  • What does being a good friend look like?
  • What would you do if you saw someone being left out or treated unkindly?
  • Who are the trusted adults you can talk to at school or at home?
Thank you for partnering with us to help every student feel safe, valued, and connected.

All month we will be talking about what it means to be an upstander and how to prevent bullying.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as a school we will raise awareness for bullying awareness. This day is also called Unity Day. We will be asking all staff and students to wear orange as a sign of unity. The color orange was selected because it is bright, warm and highly visible making it an impactful way to draw attention to the cause.

Welcome to Our New Staff

As we enter into October, it is important to introduce our newest staff members!

Dr. Brian Spano has joined DYIS as the new Assistant Principal. He will be primarily responsible for the fifth grade. He has already forged relationships with students and families! If Dr. Spano's name seems familiar it is because he had been the Science and Mathematics coach in the elementary schools!

Ms. Lola DeBoyes is our new Breakwater social worker. She is critical in supporting students in the Breakwater program who needs social-emotional and behavior support!

Ms. Brooke Whitten has joined our fourth grade teaching team. Last year she worked at ME Small as an English Language teacher. She is learning the ropes and developing rituals and routines for her students.

Mr. Anthony DiNoia is our new Physical Education teacher. He is energetic and is already creating lessons that students are excited about.

Ms. Ellen Burns is our new Literacy Coach. She comes to us with 22 years experience and has hit the ground running helping the staff navigate our new curriculum!

Mr. Benjamin Kelsey and Ms. Madison Valente have joined our staff as paraprofessionals. Mr. Ben is working with fourth grade students and Ms. Maddie has demonstrated flexibility by being in different classrooms in grades four and five!

We welcome all of the new staff and wish them the best year!

Mark Your Calendars! Family Music Bingo is Back!

Last year, DYIS had its first annual Family Music Bingo night! It was a huge success! Families were able to meet each other and listen to great music and try to win prizes!

This year, we will have our second annual Family Music Bingo on Thursday, October 15th. More information will follow!

Mrs. Baron’s STAR I class got into the fall spirit this week! Each Friday the class learns about a current event including a related recipe, STEM activity, and/or a craft activity. This week’s focus was Fall Around the United States. Students enjoyed making Cinnamon Apple Fizz drinks and completing a festive apple themed craft and writing activity!
