A Message from the Principals

Good evening DYI families,

Thank you to everyone for a successful end to 2025.  In December, we had four concerts.  Our Band, Chorus and Orchestra performed for the school during the day and for families at night.  For many of our students, it is their first time for a large school concert, especially one on stage under a spotlight!

We closed out the year with our annual Winter Wonderland.  Students traveled through six different stations and clearly enjoyed themselves.  We hope they come home with many great stories to tell.  We will post some pictures of the day on our school Instagram page, so if you have not followed us yet, please do @dyintermediateschool (we have a YouTube channel as well if you want to follow us there as well @dyintermediate)

Lastly, a huge thank you to our PTO and many parent volunteers who made Winter Wonderland a success.  Without your partnership, we would not be able to hold such great events.  We truly appreciate you working with us.

Enjoy the holiday season and see you in 2026!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blake, Dr. Greeson & Mrs. Cleary

Cold Weather Ahead!

We are expecting a very cold winter. We try to have outdoor recess whenever possible. With that being said, please send your students to school with appropriate outerwear: winter coats, hats, mittens/gloves. If you are in need of any of these items, please reach out to the school. We often have "left behind" items or even new items that students can use for the day or forever, if necessary!

With the help of Mrs. Harmon and her daughter Taylor, our class learned about Hanukkah and its traditions and enjoyed making (and tasting!) latkes as part of our celebration. It was a fun, hands-on way to explore culture together.

The First Year Band received cheers from audience after performing Jingle Jolly Christmas and Gingerbread Men On Parade at their very first performance on December 16th. Special thanks to the Grade 5 Band students who volunteered to be Band Buddies with the First Year Band. Your assistance was key in helping to make this concert a such success! We are proud of the Band Buddy mentors for stepping up and demonstrating the Dolphin Way to the younger musicians.

News from STEM Class with Ms. Dickey

In STEM, the current rotation of students just finished up exploring energy transfer through heat, light, sound, and collisions. We have also had time for some fun winter STEM activities before school vacation. Students worked in teams to engineer sleds, built gumdrop towers, and learned how to make fake snow!

Student of the Month

We are proud of our November Students of the Month (pictured here). Any staff member can nominate a student to be Student of the Month. Staff members are looking for students who are consistently following the PODS: Practicing Responsibility, Offering Respect, Demonstrating Kindness and or Staying Safe.

On Monday, December 22nd, we celebrated all of the students who earned Student of the Month for the first trimester with munchkins and hot chocolate.

Work Refusal RTI

At DYIS, we follow the PODS expectations:

Practice Responsibility
Offer Respect
Demonstrate Kindness
Stay Safe

To help reinforce Practice Responsibility, Mrs. Cleary and Dr. Greeson will begin hosting a Work Refusal RTI block once each week. If a student is consistently not completing their classwork during the week, their teacher may send them to this block to finish the assignments. Students will receive full credit for all completed work.

If a student is sent to the Work Refusal RTI block three times within a six-week period, Mrs. Cleary or Dr. Greeson will contact families, and the student will be required to stay after school to complete their work.

The good news is that this rarely happens—most students never need to attend, and those who do typically only go once!

Research about Cell Phones

Over the past few weeks, the staff and administration at DYIS have been addressing a number of issues related to student cell phone use. While many of these situations originate outside of school, the impact is often felt during the school day.

This time of year, many families are considering whether or not to provide their child with a cell phone. We know there is a lot of pressure and many factors that influence this decision. Attached, you will find an article and links to recent studies that may be helpful as you weigh your options.

Every family is different, and our intent is not to sway your decision one way or another—simply to offer information and perspectives you may find valuable.
