A Message from the Principals

Good evening DYI families,

It’s officially the holiday season at school. Some cooler temperatures, concerts and Winter Wonderland are all in our future. For 4th Grade and 5th Grade, on the day of the evening performances, we have a daytime concert as well. Each grade will perform for their peers during the school day. This concert is more of a rehearsal for the primetime evening performance. If families would like to attend the daytime concert, they may certainly do so. The schedule is within this newsletter.

On the final school day of 2025, we have our annual Winter Wonderland. We will be looking for families to help and volunteer during the day. The hot chocolate and cookie stations could always use a helping hand. Next week we will also be asking for help with donations of frosting and treats that will be used to decorate the cookies. The planned schedule for the day is:

  • Grade 4- 12:00-2:00
  • Grade 5- 8:30-10:30

To be able to volunteer, you need to have an updated CORI. If you have not had a CORI since last school year, please drop by central office (on Station Avenue in front of the school) and they will complete your CORI. The process takes no more than 5 minutes. It will probably take you longer to park your car and enter the building than to complete the CORI check.

A thank you to our PTO who ran and staffed our Book Fair throughout last week. Many students purchased books that they are eager to read. The PTO also purchased books for some students which is greatly appreciated. There is no PTO meeting this month due to everybody’s busy schedule, however, we will meet again the third Wednesday of January.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our concerts or at Winter Wonderland. Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blake, Dr. Greeson & Mrs. Cleary

DYI Report Cards Go Digital!

We will be emailing student report cards to families based upon the most up to date information that we have in PowerSchool. Please ensure your contact information and Student Verification Forms were updated this school year so we can easily provide you with your student's report card,

Cold Weather Ahead!

We are expecting a very cold week ahead. We try to have outdoor recess whenever possible. With that being said, please send your students to school with appropriate outerwear: winter coats, hats, mittens/gloves. If you are in need of any of these items, please reach out to the school. We often have "left behind" items or even new items that students can use for the day or forever, if necessary!

Grade 5 Doings

Mr. Delcourt reports that in 5th grade math, students are learning how to multiply with fractions. In 5th grade science, students have started to learn about the solar system.

Students in Mrs. Heisner's ELA class are currently working on a research project. They have spent the past few days researching and taking notes on a topic of interest. Students are now using Google Slides to share what they have learned in an interesting and easy to understand way. They will hold a museum at the end of next week to share their expertise with others.

In Ms. Studley’s ELA class, students are currently reading The Poet’s Dog by Patricia MacLachlan. This heartwarming novel follows two children and a loyal dog who find one another during a winter storm, highlighting themes of friendship, resilience, and the power of words. Throughout our unit, students are exploring character development and analyzing how characters respond to challenges. They are also practicing their compare-and-contrast skills by examining the similarities and differences between key characters as the story unfolds.
Four students stand in a classroom, each holding a copy of 'The Poet's Dog'.

Chorus

All of the 4th and 5th grade Chorus students are excited about our upcoming concerts. The 5th Grade Chorus will perform with the Band and Orchestra at our concert on Tuesday, December 9, and the 4th Grade Chorus will perform on Tuesday, December 16. Send Ms. Higgins a message if you have any questions, and we look forward to hosting a great night of music!

Amazing Knitters in After School

Students in Dr. Piper's after school cub have been knitting away and making hats for the cold winter ahead.

DYI Sock. Hat, Mitten Drive

Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate School is hosting a sock, mitten and hat drive from December 8th- December 23rd. It is projected to be a very cold winter and these items are so important to people who do not have permanent shelter. All items will be donated local homeless shelters.

Winter Wonderland

It is that time of year again when DYIS has their annual Winter Wonderland! Winter Wonderland will be held on Tuesday, December 23rd.

As in years past, we are accepting donations of frosting and sprinkles. More information will be provided to families!

Thank you in advance for any donations!

Work Refusal RTI

At DYIS, we follow the PODS expectations:

Practice Responsibility
Offer Respect
Demonstrate Kindness
Stay Safe

To help reinforce Practice Responsibility, Mrs. Cleary and Dr. Greeson will begin hosting a Work Refusal RTI block once each week. If a student is consistently not completing their classwork during the week, their teacher may send them to this block to finish the assignments. Students will receive full credit for all completed work.

If a student is sent to the Work Refusal RTI block three times within a six-week period, Mrs. Cleary or Dr. Greeson will contact families, and the student will be required to stay after school to complete their work.

The good news is that this rarely happens—most students never need to attend, and those who do typically only go once!

Research about Cell Phones

Over the past few weeks, the staff and administration at DYIS have been addressing a number of issues related to student cell phone use. While many of these situations originate outside of school, the impact is often felt during the school day.

This time of year, many families are considering whether or not to provide their child with a cell phone. We know there is a lot of pressure and many factors that influence this decision. Attached, you will find an article and links to recent studies that may be helpful as you weigh your options.

Every family is different, and our intent is not to sway your decision one way or another—simply to offer information and perspectives you may find valuable.
