A Message from the Principals

Good evening DYI families,

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Boosterthon Fundraiser. This is our largest effort of the year. We hope to limit fundraisers to this one large fundraising effort that the students enjoy. If you have not registered yet, please do so today. Did you know that about 70% of our funds raised are from extended family and friends? Please share the fun social media posts so friends near and far can help out DY Intermediate School.

After Halloween, we have a couple of events. DY Middle School has organized a STEM night on Thursday, November 6 at DYIMS. Grade 4 will have a field trip to the Young Persons’ Concert in Barnstable. The field trip form will be electronic and sent through ParentSquare. This will be our first effort with an electronic sign off for the trip. It will be similar to signing off on the student handbook which over 85% of all DYI families have done successfully so far. After the Fun Run, we will share more details about each event.

For the upcoming week, the bus company will be running bus evacuation drills. These drills will happen mornings throughout the week before school begins. If your child’s bus is a few minutes early this week, do not be surprised. Buses may only be a couple of minutes early to ensure everyone gets to school on time.

Thank you again for supporting our fundraiser. We are hoping for good weather for the Fun Run on Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blake, Dr. Greeson, and Mrs. Cleary

Music Update

Fourth graders just started Music this week. Ask your child to share their new song, and here's a glimpse of one of our moving activities. Also, please be on the lookout for information on an upcoming field trip to attend the Cape Symphony's Young People's Concert, which all 4th graders may attend.

Fifth grade is working on a folk dance move called a "grand right and left" which you can see here. Of course, they are also singing, discussing different styles of music, and reading rhythms, too.

Reminder to all 4th and 5th grade Chorus families, if you have not received the welcome letter from Ms. Higgins, please ask your child to give you the copy they took home. It has important information as well as a form for you to scan and compete.

STAR Classroom Update

Students in Mrs. Baron's STAR class recently took part in a fun and meaningful hands-on science activity that connected creativity with environmental responsibility. As part of their Earth Science unit on natural resources and land use, students learned about how everyday materials—like milk cartons—come from natural resources such as trees. To explore ways to reduce waste, the class repurposed their used milk cartons into adorable bee crafts!
Using scrap paper, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners, each student transformed their carton into a cheerful bee complete with handprint wings. This project not only reinforced lessons about reusing materials and protecting the environment, but also created a “buzz” of excitement in the classroom!

Art Update

Our fourth-grade artists at Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate School were captivated by a live clay bowl-making demo in art class this week.

What's Happening in 4th Grade

4th grade classes finished up their unit on place value, rounding and estimating. They are now working on multiplying 2 digit numbers by one digit numbers using area models, place value charts, and distributive property strategies.

In literacy, students have been working hard on using the RACES strategy to organize their writing of memoirs and personal narratives.

In science, they have completed unit 1 on plant and animal adaptations and are starting our units on how our land has changed over time.
