Dennis-Yarmouth Intermediate Middle School is the evolution of Wixon and Mattacheese. The Wixon School in Dennis has become the DY Intermediate School in Yarmouth. We are located on the first floor of the new DYIMS school and our entrance is on the corner and labeled “DY Intermediate”.
At DYI, we are committed to continuing your child’s elementary school experience. While we employ strategies so your child is ready for middle school and having multiple teachers, DY Intermediate is the next step in your child’s elementary school experience. In Grade 4, your child will have one classroom teacher for Literacy and Math. He/She will also have the same teacher for Science or Social Studies. In Grade 4, teachers are in two person teams. Your child will have the other teacher for Science or Social Studies (whichever one the main classroom teacher does not lead instruction for). When students have a different teacher for a class, the teacher comes from next door or across the hall to lead the class. Students actually do not change classrooms. In Grade 5, we take the next step in this evolution. Students in Grade 5 are on a two person teaching team and the students move themselves between classrooms. Again, these classes are next door to one another or across the hall so transitions are seamless. While there are exceptions to this arrangement, what is explained above is the foundation for all students.
DYI will provide many interesting opportunities for students beyond the classroom. There are after school activities each trimester. In the fall, students can be a part of the cross country team which is the only school sport students can join until they reach the sixth grade. During the school day, students have the opportunity to be in the Band or Orchestra. Lessons are provided for all students based on their instrument choice. Regardless, if they are in Band or Orchestra, students can also join the Chorus.
We are excited to have your child at DY Intermediate. We foster positive behaviors through our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support mindset. Students earn Dolphin Dollars through their positive interactions in the cafeteria, hallways and playground. Although in homerooms, students have the chance to interact with and meet their friends especially during recess when all of the students are together. In the classroom, our teachers work diligently to provide your child the best education possible. We are excited to work together with you to ensure your child achieves at high levels. If you ever have any concerns with your child’s education at DY Intermediate, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at blaket@dy-regional.k12.ma.us.
Sincerely,
Timothy Blake
